Abstract
Exploring the potential of organic small molecule materials in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), this research focuses on the use of coplanar π-conjugated systems as effective hole-transporting materials (HTMs). Three innovative pentafulvalene derivatives, namely YSH-oF, YSH-mF, and YSH-H, varying in fluorination, were synthesized and integrated into PSCs as HTMs. The study revealed that fluorine-incorporated derivatives, YSH-oF and YSH-mF, outperformed their non-fluorinated counterpart, YSH-H, in terms of hole mobility and charge extraction efficiency, likely due to improved π–π intermolecular packing. This led to small-area PSCs using YSH-oF and YSH-mF achieving high power conversion efficiencies of 23.59% and 22.76%, respectively, and a notable efficiency of 21.92% for large-area PSCs using YSH-oF. Additionally, the fluorinated HTMs showed enhanced long-term stability in PSCs, possibly due to their greater hydrophobicity. This research highlights the efficacy of fluorinated pentafulvalene-fused materials as cost-effective and robust HTMs for advancing the performance and durability of PSCs.
