Abstract
This study presents the design, synthesis, and application of a series of novel two-dimensional pentafulvalene-fused derivatives—YSH-oF, YSH-mF, and YSH-H—as hole-transporting materials (HTMs) in the fabrication of high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The fluorinated derivatives, YSH-oF and YSH-mF, distinguished themselves by demonstrating higher hole mobility and improved charge extraction at the perovskite/HTM interface compared to their non-fluorinated counterpart, YSH-H. These attributes are attributed to the closer intermolecular π–π packing interactions facilitated by the planar π-conjugated framework and the strong electron-withdrawing effect of the fluorine substituents, which leads to favorable energy-level alignment. As a result, small-area (0.09 cm²) PSCs constructed with YSH-oF and YSH-mF achieved impressive power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 23.59% and 22.76%, respectively, significantly outperforming the YSH-H-based devices (20.57% PCE). Notably, large-area (1.00 cm²) devices employing YSH-oF attained a PCE of 21.92%. Beyond efficiency, fluorinated HTMs YSH-oF and YSH-mF exhibited remarkable long-term stability, retaining over 85% of their initial PCE after 1000 h of ambient exposure, or over 78% after aging at 85°C for 200 h. These results highlight the potential of fluorinated pentafulvalene-fused organic small molecules as low-cost, efficient, and stable HTMs for next-generation PSCs.
